Charlie Guo argues Codex should become OpenAI's brand for its agent harness, powering ChatGPT, the Agents API and dots

Context
How OpenAI names its coding agent affects how developers find and trust it, as the company folds Codex features into ChatGPT.
This is a first hand opinion from Charlie Guo, not an OpenAI announcement. OpenAI has not said it plans any rebrand.
Deep dive
On October 15, Charlie Guo posted that the Codex name has been incredibly sticky, noting that all the technical people he knows still call the desktop app Codex, but that ChatGPT is clearly the long term product.
He wrote that it increasingly feels like Codex should be the brand of the harness, the software layer that lets models use tools and carry out tasks, and suggested labels such as ChatGPT powered by Codex, Agents API powered by Codex and dots powered by Codex.
The post reflects how OpenAI's products have blurred together. OpenAI's own materials refer to Codex, ChatGPT's Work mode and dots as separate surfaces that share features, such as the GPT Live 1.1 voice model rolled out across ChatGPT, Codex and dots the same day, and the ChatGPT Chrome extension that works in Work or Codex chats.
OpenAI's Codex lead has also been running a public 28 day push of Codex usage resets and improvements, covered earlier in this deck, which has kept the Codex name in front of developers.
Guo's suggestion is an outside view, and OpenAI has not commented on it.
What to expect next
Watch whether OpenAI changes how it names Codex, the desktop app or its agent features in coming launches, and whether it adopts anything like a powered by label.
Also watch how developers react as more Codex features move into ChatGPT, and whether rivals such as Anthropic follow a similar path with Claude Code inside the main Claude app. Naming choices in OpenAI's next release notes will be the first signal.
