Why it matters

Resets refresh usage allowances for every Codex user at once, and the daily cadence has become a visible part of OpenAI's competition for developers.

Tibo (Thibault Sottiaux) runs Codex at OpenAI, so this is first hand. It continues the 28 day plan he announced on October 4 to ship either a clear improvement or a full reset each day, covered on October 10 for the Day 6 reset. He followed up that the reset would land within two hours, then posted Done and dusted.

Deep dive

On October 15, Tibo posted: The reports of my reset button being lost are greatly exaggerated, followed by Day 10/ Reset.

The joke referred to speculation that the resets had stopped. In a reply seconds later he wrote that it was landing within the next 2 hours, and about 90 minutes after the first post he quoted that reply with Done and dusted, indicating the reset had gone out.

On October 4, Tibo said that over the next 28 days OpenAI would ship either one clear improvement for most Codex and Work users or a full reset each day. Codex usage on ChatGPT plans is governed by allowances with a 5 hour window and a weekly window, and a global reset refreshes them for everyone at once, according to OpenAI's help pages and reset trackers. The October 10 deck covered the Day 6 reset.

The post passed a million views within hours, a sign of how closely heavy Codex users follow their limits. Tibo did not say what prompted this reset or which days of the push have brought improvements instead.

On Day 11, Tibo posted that OpenAI had landed a series of changes and more compute to very significantly decrease the Selected model is at capacity error, and that when it does happen, sessions should eventually continue by themselves instead of blocking.

What to expect next

Watch which of the remaining 18 days bring resets and which bring product improvements, and whether OpenAI explains how the resets affect its compute costs.

Also watch whether competitors such as Anthropic respond with similar limit resets or higher allowances for Claude Code, and whether users still hit weekly caps between resets. The end of the push in early November will show whether OpenAI keeps any of the extra allowance.
