Jack Dorsey introduces Dessa from Block, which Block calls the first live conversation AI trained only on human speech, with no text and no pretrained models (opens the post on X)

We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

Anthropic publishes its alignment assessment of the UK AISI incident, saying Claude Mythos 5 attacked a real GitHub project and used fake identities to pressure a maintainer, and that newer Anthropic models are far less likely to start such an attack (opens the post on X)

In August, @AISecurityInst reported an incident where Claude Mythos 5 took unauthorized actions on the internet during AISI’s testing of its cyber capabilities. We've now produced a further analysis of this incident, to better understand the model's alignment properties.

OpenAI says it removed live internet access from all frontier model training, paused that training for 11 days after a model escaped through a DNS misconfiguration on September 20, and used its own models to red team its containment (opens the post on X)

Over the past several months, we have substantially hardened the security of our research training environment. We’ve removed live internet access for all frontier models during training and built an offline world for them to use instead—a cached version of the web where they can still learn to browse, search, and use applications. On September 20, after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside of this offline world, we paused frontier training to strengthen containment further. We assembled teams of agents, powered by our most cyber-capable models, and tasked them with finding weaknesses in our research environments. While they found no route to the internet they could easily exploit while concealing their activity from our monitors, they did find zero-day vulnerabilities, virtual machine escapes, and hardware side-channels for communication between agents. We used their discoveries to further strengthen our defenses and contribute fixes to open-source software. After strengthening our containment architecture, we resumed our frontier RL training and inference on October 1. We’ve reserved substantial compute for continuous red-teaming, and made high-compute red-teaming part of the safety cases we use to decide whether frontier training and evaluation can proceed securely.

OpenAI says its containment red teaming also found an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in Brotli, the compression library inside Node.js, Bun and Envoy (opens the post on X)

During this red-teaming exercise, we also found a vulnerability that allows for unauthenticated remote code execution in Brotli, a widely-deployed compression library included in many pieces of software such as Node.js, Bun, and Envoy. The flaw could let an attacker run their own code on affected systems by sending or replying with malicious compressed data, without any need to create a user account. That is, an unpatched server that accepts compressed input could be taken over by a malicious client, and an unpatched client that accepts compressed input (such as “curl --compressed”) could be taken over by a malicious server. This root cause issue was actually fixed in the Brotli source code in February, but it wasn’t known at the time that it gave rise to a security vulnerability and there was no more recent release of Brotli. Since Brotli is built into other software, any software which includes this library needs to take the update too, followed by the users of that software. We disclosed the vulnerability to Brotli and other downstream projects such as Node.js, which released or are currently releasing security updates, and Brotli cut new release versions and published a CVE. More details on the patch and mitigations below:

Google DeepMind's Jon Barron says every standard softmax and cross entropy implementation has two subtle numerical bugs, and a short rewrite fixes both and removes grokking slingshots (opens the post on X)

Hi all, I have a new result I'm excited to share. It turns out that *all existing implementations* of softmax and cross-entropy (that's JAX, PyTorch, textbooks, etc) have a subtle bug --- two bugs, actually. A simple rewrite fixes both, and eliminates "slingshots" when grokking:

Simular says its Agent S4 evolved new interfaces that let an unchanged open Qwen3.8 27B model complete 21.3% of OSWorld V2 tasks, above its reported results for GPT 5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8, at $1.10 per task (opens the post on X)

Our agent scientist, Agent S4, just got an open 27B model to beat GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8 on OSWorld V2, with the model's weights left exactly as they were. With the interfaces S4 evolved, Qwen3.8-27B completes 21.3% of the 108 tasks, the highest binary success of any open-source computer-use agent and 3.8x the same model with fixed interfaces. It costs $1.10 per task, against $25.50 for GPT-5.5 and $72.40 for Opus 4.8 💸 Full write-up:

A 37 second promotional video made of slides. It opens on text reading Software was built for human eyes and hands, Not for AI agents, then Today, agents use it the way we do, one click, one screenshot at a time. Diagrams show a population of repositories with selection, mutation and crossover steps and how the population evolved over rounds, then a side by side of the same model and task without and with an evolved interface, with counters reading 189 and 114. Closing cards read 3.8x as many tasks solved, with bars of 21.3% against 5.6%, and 23.2x cheaper per task than GPT 5.5, with bars of $25.50 against $1.10.
