13Tooling

Anthropic's ClaudeDevs account says Claude now supports MCP Tasks for long running plugin jobs and Elicitations that let plugins ask users for input mid task

We’re adding support for MCP Tasks and Elicitations in Claude. Tasks let Claude give plugins long-running jobs such as deep research and report back when they’re done.

Context

Why it matters

Plugins can now take on slow jobs such as deep research without stalling the conversation, and can stop to ask a person for a decision. It moves agent tools closer to real workflows that need time and approvals.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard Claude uses to connect to outside tools, and Tasks shipped as an extension in the 2026-07-28 MCP release, according to Upstash. A follow up post in the thread says both features are available today in the Claude Code CLI and are rolling out to more Claude products. The post was published at 2:24 PM Eastern on October 23.

Deep dive

ClaudeDevs posted at 2:24 PM Eastern on October 23 that Claude is adding support for MCP Tasks and Elicitations. Tasks let Claude hand plugins long running jobs, such as deep research, and get a report back when they finish. A second post in the thread says Elicitations let plugins ask users for input mid task, such as confirming a refund or filling in a missing detail.

According to the thread, both are available today in the Claude Code CLI and are coming to more Claude products. Summaries from Chasing Next and Upstash add detail. A tool that supports Tasks accepts the job and hands control straight back, so Claude keeps working. Running jobs appear in a footer count and in a tasks view where they can be checked or cancelled. A job on a remote server keeps running after Claude Code is closed. Elicitations appear as a small form in the terminal, and declining counts as an answer.

The limits matter. Upstash reports it is a public beta from Claude Code version 2.1.304, works in interactive terminal sessions, the Agent SDK and GitHub Actions, and does not yet cover the VS Code extension, the desktop app, subagent calls or one shot runs. Plugin builders also have to add support on their own servers; existing tools do not get it automatically.

Upstash adds that David Soria Parra, co creator of MCP at Anthropic, announced Tasks support in a keynote on October 22, a day before this post.

What to expect next

The rollout to the desktop app, the VS Code extension and the Claude apps is the next milestone Anthropic has pointed to, without a date. Adoption depends on plugin and connector builders adding Tasks and Elicitations to their MCP servers, so watch for major connectors announcing support. Other MCP clients may follow, since Tasks is part of the open protocol rather than a Claude only feature.
