OpenAI's Codex lead Tibo says about 40,000 accounts were charged usage that did not match their plan, and OpenAI will add credits
There were reports of usage draining faster than anticipated for some users over the weekend. We've identified approximately 40,000 accounts that had an inconsistency on which usage limits where the actual usage that was applied did not correspond to their actual selected plan. We are reaching out individually to all these users and have corrected the issue. If this affected you, we'll add credits to your account. Sorry we got this wrong.
Context
Heavy Codex users who hit limits early over the weekend were not imagining it, and affected accounts are being compensated.
Tibo leads Codex at OpenAI and has been posting a daily run of usage limit resets, covered separately in this deck. This post is about a different problem: a bug that applied the wrong usage limits to some accounts.
Deep dive
On October 20, Tibo posted that there were reports of usage draining faster than anticipated for some users over the weekend.
He said OpenAI identified approximately 40,000 accounts with an inconsistency in their usage limits, where the usage actually applied did not correspond to the plan they had selected. He said OpenAI is reaching out individually to all of these users, has corrected the issue, and will add credits to affected accounts. Sorry we got this wrong, he wrote.
He did not say which plans were involved, how much extra usage was charged, how large the credits will be, or when the problem started beyond the weekend. Codex usage is measured over five hour and weekly windows, so a wrong limit could cut users off well before they expected.
The post comes the same day as his Day 15 reset announcement, the latest in a series of resets he has given Codex users. A reset restores everyone's limits, while this fix targets the specific accounts that were charged incorrectly. The post drew more than 1,400 replies, many from users asking whether they were affected.
The figures come from Tibo's post and have not been checked independently.
What to expect next
Watch for affected users to report the credits arriving, and for OpenAI to say how large they are. Also watch whether OpenAI explains what caused the mismatch between plans and limits, and whether it adds a way for users to see which limits are being applied to their account. More resets during Tibo's run could make it harder for users to tell a bug from normal limits.
