Why it matters

Musk keeps pitching Grok Bot as a trustworthy shopping agent, which raises the stakes if it makes costly mistakes.

This is promotion from Musk, whose company makes Grok Bot, quoting a fan account. On October 15 he said SpaceX will make users whole if Grok Bot makes a purchase mistake or leaks a card.

Deep dive

Early on October 19, Elon Musk quoted Teslaconomics, who wrote that he is like 99.99999% convinced Grok Bot is the greatest thing that's ever happened to AI. Musk added: Hire Grok Bot today. You won't regret it. The post passed 1.9 million views.

Minutes earlier, Musk replied Exactly to a long post from X Freeze, who said many people had asked whether it is actually safe to let Grok Bot buy things with a credit card after he posted about doing so. X Freeze argued that people have handed cards to strangers at restaurants for decades, and that agents can be sandboxed, given limited permissions and asked to get approval before important decisions.

He wrote that in his experience Grok Bot pauses and asks when something is expensive or needs attention, that it avoids the distraction of shopping site advertising, and that he runs out of usage limits every week. He also cited Musk's October 15 promise that SpaceX will make users whole if Grok Bot makes a purchase mistake or leaks a card, which Musk said has never happened yet.

The posts give no data on how often Grok Bot's purchases go wrong. Grok Bot's documentation says the bot should hand control to the user for payment confirmations, and on October 17 Musk said a screenshot of a card is the easiest way to give it payment details.

What to expect next

Watch whether xAI publishes how the make whole promise works in practice, including how users file a claim and what counts as a mistake.

Also watch for reports of wrong or unwanted purchases as more people follow Musk's advice, and whether xAI adds a dedicated, secure payment feature. Musk's daily promotion of Grok Bot is likely to continue, and so are questions about its safety.
