OpenAI launches a Rosalind Academic Plan giving eligible US university labs free access to its GPT Rosalind life sciences model

We're expanding access to GPT-Rosalind for academic research. The new Rosalind Academic Plan helps scientific labs bring AI into the work of understanding biology, exploring ideas, and deciding what to test next—with sponsored access for eligible labs at U.S. universities. Academic research starts with questions whose impact may take years to impact human health.

Context

Why it matters

Sponsored access could put a specialized biology model into many academic labs, while OpenAI keeps it behind a trusted access review because of biosecurity concerns.

This is a first hand launch post from OpenAI. Access to GPT Rosalind requires approval through OpenAI's trusted access process, and the plan does not include API access.

Deep dive

On October 15, OpenAI posted that it is expanding access to GPT Rosalind for academic research. It said the new Rosalind Academic Plan helps scientific labs bring AI into understanding biology, exploring ideas and deciding what to test next, with sponsored access for eligible labs at US universities.

OpenAI's announcement describes GPT Rosalind as its dedicated life sciences model, paired with a Rosalind workbench for tools across medicinal chemistry, genomics and wet lab assistance. Eligible labs can receive up to 30 Business Standard seats at no cost for up to 12 months, with access to OpenAI's other commercially available frontier models subject to usage limits.

Access to GPT Rosalind itself requires trusted access approval. Principal investigators at universities without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement apply on behalf of their labs, while labs at universities with an agreement go through their institution. OpenAI says API access is not included at this time, and that verified lab leads manage permissions and are responsible for approved use.

The plan is currently limited to US universities.

What to expect next

Watch how many labs are approved and how long trusted access reviews take, which will show whether the program reaches beyond a few well connected universities.

Also watch whether OpenAI extends it to universities outside the US or adds API access, and whether Anthropic and Google respond with their own academic science programs. Published research that credits the model would be the clearest sign of its real value to science.
