OpenAI puts composer predictions in Codex into beta for Pro users, suggesting your next message
Now in beta: composer predictions in Codex for Pro users. Codex can now suggest your next message based on your conversation and how you talk to it. One of the most loved new features we've ever tested internally.

Context
Codex can now draft the follow up you were about to type, a small change that could speed up long agent sessions, and OpenAI says it is free during the beta.
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, available in a desktop app, the CLI and the cloud. Composer predictions arrive a day after OpenAI rolled out Ultrafast mode for GPT 6.1 Sol in Codex. OpenAI's help center describes the feature as a beta for personal ChatGPT Pro accounts in the Codex desktop app.
Deep dive
OpenAI Developers announced on October 9 that composer predictions are in beta in Codex for Pro users, saying Codex can suggest a user's next message based on the conversation and how they talk to it. OpenAI called it one of the most loved features it has ever tested internally, but did not share usage numbers.
According to OpenAI's help center, the beta is for users aged 18 and older on personal ChatGPT Pro plans in all supported regions. It works in local and SSH threads in the Codex desktop app with GPT 6 Astra and GPT 6.1 Sol. After Codex finishes a response, a suggested complete message may appear in the message box, and the user presses Tab to accept it, then reviews or edits it before sending. OpenAI says predictions do not update word by word as you type, and a suggestion will not appear after every response.
OpenAI's community post says the feature is on by default for eligible users and can be switched off in settings. It says generating predictions costs nothing extra and uses no Codex limits or credits during the beta, while sent messages follow normal usage. Predictions use only context already in the current thread, not memories or connected apps, according to the post.
What to expect next
Watch for wider availability, since the help center limits the beta to personal Pro plans in the desktop app, and for pricing once the beta ends.
Also watch whether rivals copy the idea. Anthropic and others have been shipping agent features at a fast pace, and a suggested next message is easy to add to any chat based coding tool. Users' reactions to how often the suggestions are right will decide whether it sticks.
