DHH says he now prefers Codex as his main coding agent and Claude as secondary, praising GPT 6.1 Sol

This is the first time I've actually preferred with drive as Codex as main and Claude as secondary for an extended period of time. Amazing how good Sol 6.1 is!

Why it matters

A prominent developer says OpenAI's latest model has won his daily coding work, a small but visible signal in the close race between coding agents.

David Heinemeier Hansson, known as DHH, created Ruby on Rails and is CTO of 37signals, and he also leads the Omarchy Linux project. OpenAI released GPT 6.1 Sol on September 29, and on October 8 it rolled out a faster Ultrafast mode for the model in the API, Codex and ChatGPT Work. DHH's screenshot shows an agents usage panel tracking his Claude Code and Codex plans.

Deep dive

In a post on October 9, DHH wrote that for the first time he has preferred to drive with Codex as his main coding agent and Claude as secondary for an extended period, and called Sol 6.1 amazing. Sol 6.1 refers to OpenAI's GPT 6.1 Sol model, which runs in Codex.

The attached screenshot shows an agents usage panel. It lists two Claude Code accounts on the Max 20x plan, labeled primary and secondary, with the secondary marked active and both showing little usage. Below them, a Codex plan shows a weekly usage bar about half full.

The post is a personal view and does not include benchmarks or details of the tasks he ran. It drew more than 900 likes and over 130 replies within hours.

The post comes a day after OpenAI rolled out Ultrafast mode for GPT 6.1 Sol in the API, Codex and ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI describes as near Astra intelligence at up to 8x faster speeds than Sol Standard. DHH had already defended AI assisted coding on October 8, when he criticized Linux projects that ban AI written contributions.

What to expect next

Watch whether other well known developers report a similar shift, and whether Anthropic answers with a new Claude Code release or model update.

DHH says he has preferred Codex for an extended period, but he has not said whether he plans to drop Claude. His posts often reach a large developer audience, so follow up comments could show whether the change sticks.
