NVIDIA says Jensen Huang received the National Medal of Science for GPU computing
Congratulations to our CEO @JensenHuang on receiving the National Medal of Science for advancing GPU computing to power scientific breakthroughs. And to fellow honorees Elon Musk, Lisa Su, Michael Dell, Satya Nadella, and Sergey Brin.
Context
NVIDIA's post also names Elon Musk, Lisa Su, Michael Dell, Satya Nadella and Sergey Brin as honorees, without saying which medal each received.
NVIDIA posted the congratulations on October 8. It says the medal recognizes Jensen Huang's work advancing GPU computing to power scientific breakthroughs, and it lists five other people as fellow honorees. A White House release the same day splits the group across two medals and publishes a citation for each person. NVIDIA's post does not make that split.
Deep dive
NVIDIA says its CEO, Jensen Huang, received the National Medal of Science for advancing GPU computing to power scientific breakthroughs. In the same post it congratulates Elon Musk, Lisa Su, Michael Dell, Satya Nadella and Sergey Brin as fellow honorees. The post does not say which award each of those five received, and it does not quote a citation.
The White House release, dated October 8, says President Trump presented the medals at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit. It lists four recipients of the National Medal of Science: Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su. It lists two recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation: Michael Dell and Satya Nadella. That split is the White House's, not NVIDIA's.
Huang's citation, as the White House prints it, credits him with advancing the graphics processing unit into a general purpose computing architecture through processor design and software, and with work that powered breakthroughs in scientific computing and super intelligence. Su's citation credits semiconductor engineering and high performance computing. Brin's credits algorithms for finding and processing information. Musk's credits engineering at large scale in space exploration, intelligent systems, communications and manufacturing. Dell and Nadella are cited under the technology medal. Nadella's citation mentions cloud computing and infrastructure for training and deploying what the release calls American super intelligence.
The release calls the two medals the nation's highest honors for achievement and leadership in science and technology. NVIDIA's shorter post is the company's own emphasis: Huang, GPUs, and a list of fellow honorees.
What to expect next
The citations are public, so the remaining question is how the medalists describe the awards themselves. NVIDIA has so far stated Huang's medal and the shared list, not the citations.
The White House text uses the phrase super intelligence in Huang's citation and in Nadella's. That wording may get pulled into the day's separate argument over the term. The release is about the medals and a science summit, not about a new chip or a new model.
