Context
Google wants companies to hand whole assignments to one agent that works across Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack, putting it head to head with Microsoft, OpenAI and SpaceXAI.
Google announced the agent at its Gemini at Work 2026 event, as part of Gemini Enterprise, which it says is used by nearly 90% of the Fortune 100. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian presented an agent that can research, write documents and code, coordinate other agents and keep the same memory across apps and devices. Google has not given a general availability date or separate pricing.
Deep dive
According to VentureBeat, the universal Gemini agent can run workflows lasting multiple days, handle parallel assignments, respond to scheduled tasks and assemble temporary teams of specialized sub agents. Because it runs in the cloud, a user can start a task on one device and pick it up on another.
It can act as a personal assistant or as a persistent coworker for a team. In the coworker setup, an agent can get its own Workspace account, email address, calendar, Drive storage and directory entry, and staff can assign it work by mentioning it in Google Chat. Google says coworker agents can only access information team members explicitly share with them.
Each agent gets a cryptographically attested identity, and its actions are logged. An Agent Gateway enforces company policies on communication with outside systems. Memory covers sessions, accumulated knowledge, learned workflows and past work. Integrations include Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, Git, BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Microsoft Teams and MCP servers.
The agent uses Gemini models and can already use Anthropic's Claude models, with more planned. Google also announced Smart Routing to pick models by cost and performance, plus preview agents for finance and legal work. VentureBeat noted Google did not provide independent benchmarks on how reliably the agent finishes long tasks.
What to expect next
The biggest open questions are timing and cost. Google has not said when customers can use the universal agent or provision digital coworkers, or whether it is included in current Gemini Enterprise subscriptions.
Watch for rollout details, for how administrators control agent accounts, and for early customer reports on reliability. Microsoft's new Copilot, OpenAI's Dots agents and SpaceXAI's Grok Bot target the same work, so pricing moves from rivals may follow.
