Thinking Machines Launches Inkling 2 Small, Scoring 31 on the AA Intelligence Index With Apache 2.0 Weights Planned

Introducing Inkling 2 Small. Scoring 31 on the AA Intelligence Index, it's a big jump over its predecessor. Inkling 2 Small is available for fine-tuning and inference on Tinker today, with full weight release planned soon.

Context

Why it matters

Mira Murati's lab ships a strong MoE reasoning model on Tinker now, with Apache 2.0 weights planned after safety checks.

Thinking Machines Lab (@thinkymachines), Mira Murati's company, posted Inkling 2 Small on Nov 5. The company says it is a mixture of experts model with 594B total parameters and 17B active, with image input and variable effort. It is live on Tinker for fine tuning and inference with closed weights first. The lab says full Apache 2.0 weights are planned next week after external safety testing.

Deep dive

Thinking Machines (@thinkymachines) introduced Inkling 2 Small on Nov 5 as the second generation of its Inkling line. The lab says the model is a mixture of experts design with 594 billion total parameters and 17 billion active, plus image inputs and variable effort.

According to the company blog, Inkling 2 Small scores 31 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, a large jump from the prior Inkling Small. Artificial Analysis separately reported the score near 31 and said planned open weights would make it the highest scoring open weights model developed outside China on current rankings. The lab highlights gains on agentic coding, vision, knowledge work, and long horizon autonomous tasks, including demos of web apps, 3D scenes, and multi hour autoresearch runs on Tinker.

Availability starts closed on Tinker and Tinker Playground for sampling and fine tuning. Thinking Machines says Apache 2.0 weight release is planned next week after external safety testing and red teaming. Pricing on Tinker is listed at $0.30 per million input tokens and $1.00 per million output tokens. Independent posts from DesignArena and Thoughtful also circulated strong early leaderboard and PostTrainBench claims around the launch.

What to expect next

Watch for the promised Apache 2.0 weight drop and third party evals that confirm the AA Index 31 claim outside lab tables. Early Tinker users will test coding agents, vision loops, and finance workflows that the blog demos. How fast safety review clears the open release will decide whether Inkling 2 Small becomes a default open American MoE base. Follow on larger Inkling 2 sizes are also flagged as part of a model ladder.
