Justin Uberti Says OpenAI's GPT Live Outbound Telephony API Is Generally Available Over Any SIP Trunk
Just promoted our new GPT-Live outbound telephony API to GA, allowing developers to make phone calls from their Live voice agent, via any SIP trunk provider (e.g, Telnyx or Twilio). Calls can use HD Voice and can send and receive keypad events (DTMF).
Context
Letting Live voice agents place calls over any SIP trunk makes phone capable AI agents much easier for developers to ship.
Justin Uberti (@juberti) works on realtime voice at OpenAI. GPT Live is OpenAI's realtime voice model line. SIP is the standard protocol phone carriers and apps use to connect calls. GA means generally available.
Deep dive
Justin Uberti (@juberti) posted on Nov 4 that OpenAI has promoted its new GPT Live outbound telephony API to general availability. He wrote that developers can make phone calls from their Live voice agent via any SIP trunk provider, naming Telnyx and Twilio as examples.
According to the post, calls can use HD Voice and can send and receive keypad events (DTMF). A code screenshot shows creating a live session with model gpt live 1, voice settings and a SIP destination.
The post links documentation. It does not list pricing in the text.
Outbound calling is the other half of voice agents that can already answer phones. GA over standard SIP trunks means teams can plug Live agents into the phone systems they already pay for, instead of waiting on a single vendor's dialer.
That matters for support, scheduling and sales agents that need to call people back, not only chat in an app.
The post passed about 120,000 views.
What to expect next
Watch for developers to ship appointment and support agents that dial out with GPT Live, and for pricing details in the docs. Telnyx, Twilio and other SIP providers may post guides. Rivals such as Gemini and open voice stacks may match outbound SIP support. Call recording and consent rules will shape enterprise use. OpenAI may also add inbound SIP or carrier partnerships beyond the examples named in the post.
