Elon Musk Says Two More Colossus 2 Buildings, Gun Range and Spam, Will Add About 420,000 Nvidia GB300s by December
Macroharder and Minihard both have 220k GB300s with 800 gig nics configured for training. Gun Range will have the same. Spam (used to house Hormel products) will have ~200k GB300s, but configured for inference, so much simpler networking and less than half the fiber. I walked the whole Colossus 2 site around midnight and again this morning. Good progress by the SpaceX team and contractors. Gun Range is tracking to be operational by end of November and Spam in December.
Context
Compute on this scale decides how fast frontier models can be trained and served, and Musk says Colossus 2 will hold about 1.2 million Blackwell GPUs by the end of the year.
Colossus 2 is the second giant AI supercomputer site in Memphis, Tennessee, used by Musk's companies to train and run Grok models. Earlier on Oct 31 a video tour of the site by Herbert Ong with the Tesla investor known as CernBasher described its buildings, and Musk replied with this update. Summaries of his numbers by Sawyer Merritt and X Freeze each passed 260,000 views.
Deep dive
Elon Musk gave a building by building update on Colossus 2, the supercomputer site in Memphis, on Oct 31, replying to a video tour of the site posted by Herbert Ong.
Musk wrote that two buildings named Macroharder and Minihard each hold 220,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs with 800 gigabit network cards, configured for training. He said a third building, Gun Range, will have the same setup and is tracking to be operational by the end of November. A fourth, Spam, will hold about 200,000 GB300s configured for inference, which he said needs much simpler networking and less than half the fiber. Musk said Spam once housed Hormel products, and in a later reply said Gun Range was the local police department's gun range.
Taken together, the two new buildings would add about 420,000 GB300s, and the four buildings named would hold roughly 860,000. In another reply that drew more than 900,000 views, Musk said Colossus 2 will have a total of around 1.2 million Blackwell GPUs by the end of the year. Replying to a question about a separate building called Macrohard, he said it holds 110,000 GB200s and 220,000 GB300s.
Musk said he walked the whole site around midnight and again the next morning, and credited the SpaceX team and contractors for the progress. The figures and dates come from Musk and have not been independently confirmed. Sawyer Merritt estimated the two new clusters at more than $35 billion of GPUs, which is his estimate rather than a company figure.
What to expect next
Watch whether Gun Range comes online by the end of November and Spam in December, as Musk says, and whether the 1.2 million Blackwell total is reached by the end of the year. Power supply, local permits and Nvidia delivery schedules are the main limits on a buildout this fast. The split between training and inference buildings also hints at how much capacity will go to serving Grok to users versus training the next model.
