Context
Perplexity is locking in dedicated compute for its models and agents, a sign that AI apps beyond the biggest labs now need long term GPU capacity of their own.
IREN is a data center and AI cloud company that grew out of bitcoin mining. Perplexity runs an AI answer engine and Perplexity Computer, its agent product. Blackwell Ultra is NVIDIA's latest generation of data center GPUs.
Deep dive
IREN announced on Friday that Perplexity is working with it under a multi year agreement. According to the post, Perplexity will run workloads on NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs at an IREN data center campus, supporting the models and agents behind Perplexity Computer.
IREN says more than 50,000 organizations use Perplexity every day, asking more than 1.5 billion questions a month, and that its IREN AI Cloud delivers the capacity and consistent performance needed for AI workloads at scale. The post did not give the value of the deal, the number of GPUs or which campus will host them.
An image attached to the post quotes Nate Kupp, VP of Engineering at Perplexity. He says a core part of Perplexity's strategy is making full outcomes more reliable and affordable, that every efficiency gain from new models to new chips should show up as better outputs at lower cost, and that dedicated compute is one element of making that possible as the company invests in its next phase of growth.
The deal adds Perplexity to the list of AI companies renting capacity from former crypto miners that have turned their power and sites toward AI data centers.
What to expect next
Watch whether IREN or Perplexity share the deal size, the GPU count or the location, which would show how large the commitment is. Investors will look for it in IREN's next results. Also watch whether Perplexity signs similar deals with other providers as its agent products grow, and whether more AI apps follow with dedicated compute of their own rather than relying only on large cloud providers.
