OpenCode Lets Developers Use Their Claude Subscription Again Through a New Claude Code Integration

you can now use your claude subscription in OpenCode

Context

Why it matters

Developers who pay for a Claude plan can use it inside a popular open source coding agent again, without a separate API key, through a route that runs Anthropic's own Claude Code.

OpenCode is an open source AI coding agent. Its version 1.3.0, released in March, removed a bundled plugin that let users sign in with a Claude account. Anthropic's Claude Code terms bar third party apps from offering Claude.ai login or routing requests through consumer plan credentials, but allow users to sign in to the unmodified Claude Code program.

Deep dive

OpenCode announced on Friday that users can now use their Claude subscription in the tool, quoting a post from Daniel Smolsky, who wrote that Claude subscriptions in OpenCode are back and shared a short demo video.

The feature shipped in OpenCode 2.2.3 on GitHub on October 30. The release notes describe a new built in Claude Agent provider: users install Claude Code, sign in with the claude auth login command, then choose Claude Agent in the connect menu to use their Claude Code login and models. A follow up release, 2.2.4, added guided setup and connection checks for the same provider.

According to a report by Tech City Authority citing OpenCode's documentation, the provider runs Claude Code on the user's own machine and requires Claude Code 2.1.248 or later. Claude Code calls the model while OpenCode handles its own tools, permissions, compaction and subagents. Claude Code settings, CLAUDE.md files, hooks, MCP servers and memory are not loaded, and the option does not work in remote workspaces.

The design differs from the plugin OpenCode removed in March, since OpenCode now drives an official Claude Code installation instead of handling Claude credentials itself. As of the report, Anthropic had not publicly commented on the integration.

What to expect next

Watch whether Anthropic comments on the integration or changes its terms, since it says it can enforce its restrictions without notice. Developers will also test how the subscription route handles heavy use, given that the release published no cost or reliability comparison with native Claude Code. Other open source coding agents may copy the same approach of driving the official Claude Code program. Any change to Claude plan limits would affect how useful this route is.
