Google Is Winding Down Its Jules Coding Agent and Folding Its Lessons Into Antigravity

When we launched Jules, it was an experiment to learn how asynchronous coding agents can help developers ship faster. Seeing what you built taught us so much about where agentic development is headed, directly shaping several products across @Google. We’re working on bringing our learnings from Jules into @antigravity so you get the best of both worlds: autonomous remote background task execution and an agent-first development environment. As we focus on this unified experience, Jules will be winding down. Whether you used Jules to crush bugs, write tests, or launch features— thank you for shaping the future of agentic coding! 💙🦑

Context

Why it matters

It shows Google consolidating its crowded lineup of coding agents around Antigravity, and Jules users have a hard deadline to move their work.

Jules is an asynchronous coding agent from Google that works on tasks in the background and opens pull requests. Google launched it in December 2024. Antigravity is Google's agent first development environment.

Deep dive

The Jules account said on Thursday that Jules will be winding down. The post says Jules began as an experiment to learn how asynchronous coding agents could help developers ship faster, and that what users built shaped several products across Google.

According to the post, Google is bringing its learnings from Jules into Antigravity so users get both autonomous remote background tasks and an agent first development environment.

Google's turndown notice gives the dates. Users can keep finishing sessions until November 11, 2026, after which Jules becomes read only, and the service winds down on December 31, 2026. Users can export settings, environment variables, scheduled tasks, connected repositories, memories, setup scripts and full session history to a local folder. Code, branches and pull requests already live in GitHub and stay there.

Google has not said when Jules style background tasks will arrive in Antigravity, and coverage notes there is no automatic migration of schedules or memories. The Verge reported the shutdown on Thursday.

The move follows a broader pattern of AI companies trimming overlapping agent products as coding tools become a central battleground with OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Code and Cursor.

What to expect next

Watch for a date when Antigravity adds remote background tasks, which will decide whether Jules users stay with Google or move to rivals. Teams relying on Jules scheduled tasks should export before November 11. Further consolidation of Google's developer AI products is possible as it focuses on fewer, larger platforms. Developers comparing options will weigh Codex, Claude Code and Cursor background agents, which already offer similar remote task features.
