Canva Introduces Brush, Its First Vision Language Model for Design
Introducing Brush: Our first vision-language model for design. 🖌️ Brush sees your design’s layout, layers and vibe the way you do, and edits alongside you. Fix one line of text, restyle a whole deck or build from a blank page. See what Brush can do 👇
Context
A model trained to understand layouts and layers could make AI edits to real designs far more precise than general models that treat a design as a flat image.
Canva is a popular online design platform used for social posts, presentations and marketing materials. A vision language model can read images as well as text. Canva has offered AI features built on outside models; Brush is its first model built for design.
Deep dive
Canva said on Thursday it is introducing Brush, its first vision language model for design. According to the post, Brush sees a design's layout, layers and vibe the way the user does, and edits alongside them, whether fixing one line of text, restyling a whole deck or building from a blank page.
Canva's newsroom post says Brush makes editable changes from prompts, so results stay as normal Canva elements rather than flattened images. It can restyle designs, update multi page decks and adapt a design across formats. Coverage says it powers supported edits in Canva AI for Canva Pro users, who can pick Brush in the Canva AI menu.
Canva claims edits are up to 69 percent faster and 46 percent cheaper to run than its previous design agent. These are Canva's own figures and have not been independently tested. There is no public API for the model.
The launch follows a trend of app makers building their own specialized models instead of relying only on general models from large labs, aiming for better quality and lower costs in their core use case.
What to expect next
Watch whether Brush reaches free users and the Canva developer platform, and how designers judge its edits on complex files. Adobe and Figma are investing heavily in AI design tools, so the race to understand layers and layouts is heating up. Canva's own model could also lower its reliance on outside AI providers. Pricing and whether Brush comes to Canva's enterprise plans are also worth tracking.
