Context

Why it matters

Investors are paying unicorn prices for a bet that the next personal AI assistant will be shared among friends and families rather than one person typing into a chat box.

Eugenia Kuyda previously founded Replika, the AI companion app. Wabi started as a way to build mini apps from prompts and this month relaunched as Wabi 2.0, a personal agent that works inside group chats and creates shared mini apps such as meal planners and trip lists. IVP is a growth stage venture firm.

Deep dive

Eugenia Kuyda said on Thursday that Wabi has raised 55 million dollars in a Series A at a 1.25 billion dollar valuation, led by IVP with support from a16z, Forerunner and angels including Marc Benioff, Tobi Lutke, Dick Costolo and Marissa Mayer. The company's press release adds the Amazon Alexa Fund and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers.

Kuyda framed the product as an operating system for your life. In her telling, life is scattered across apps, group chats, calendars and tabs, and Wabi is a personal AI that brings people, context and apps together so groups can coordinate plans and share the mental load.

TechCrunch notes that Wabi began as a tool for building apps from prompts and pivoted last month toward an AI messenger, with an agent that builds the interfaces you need. Other coverage says Wabi 2.0 rolled out publicly on October 19 and works across iOS, Android and Mac, with Windows planned.

Wabi says the money will go to product development and expansion. It did not disclose user numbers, revenue, or whether the valuation is before or after the new money.

What to expect next

Watch for user and retention numbers, which will show whether group based AI catches on beyond early adopters. Wabi competes with assistants from OpenAI, Google and Meta that are adding group chats and connected apps of their own, so it needs a clear social edge. Expansion to Windows and any partnerships with messaging platforms would be the next signals to follow closely.
