OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux Says Usage Limits Are Doubling for Pro and Business Premium and the Pro 200 Cut Is Off
Day 25/ We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today. We heard your kind feedback and won’t be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same. We’re also going to continue offering extended limits for dots for now, and usage of your dot will still continue to be separate from your default usage. And we'll of course also keep shipping better models and other efficiency improvements that increase your effective usage over time.
Context
Heavy Codex and ChatGPT Work users get twice the capacity at the same price, and OpenAI reversed a planned cut after pushback, a sign of how fierce competition for coding users has become.
Thibault Sottiaux, known as Tibo, leads Codex at OpenAI and has been posting a numbered daily series of updates. OpenAI's Pro plans cost 100, 200 and 500 dollars a month. In a September 29 email OpenAI had told some Pro 200 subscribers their Work and Codex allowance would be reduced. Dots are OpenAI's always on agents, which have their own separate limits.
Deep dive
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex at OpenAI, posted on Thursday that OpenAI is doubling all usage limits for its Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers and for Business Premium, effective immediately.
He also said OpenAI heard the feedback and will not reduce limits for Pro 200, so Work and Codex usage there stays the same. Extended limits for dots will continue for now, with dot usage still counted separately from default usage. He added that better models and efficiency gains would keep raising effective usage over time.
OpenAI's release notes give more detail. Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance. The Pro 200 reduction announced in a September 29 email is canceled, and Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance get twice their previous amount, bringing them up to the higher level. Business Premium allowances are also increased, without exact figures.
The post did not give numbers. Some outlets report the cut would have started October 30 and describe the new levels as multiples of the Plus plan, but OpenAI has not published those multiples in the notes we read. Usage also depends on the model, reasoning level and speed mode chosen.
What to expect next
Watch whether users see the higher limits in practice, especially with fast modes that burn through allowances quicker, and whether OpenAI publishes exact allowances. Rivals such as Anthropic may respond with their own limit changes for heavy coding users. The reversal also shows that subscriber backlash can move OpenAI's pricing, which could shape how it handles future plan changes and limit cuts.
