OpenAI Enables ChatGPT Pro Users in the US to Text Their Dot via iMessage and RCS for Proactive Task Updates

By popular request, you can now text your dot. Give it a task to take off your plate or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos, or even voice notes. It will text you proactively with relevant updates. Safe, secure texting via iMessage or RCS. You’re the only one who can text your dot, and your dot can only text you. Rolling out now as a preview for Pro users in the US.

Context

Why it matters

OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT's persistent personal assistant directly into native mobile messaging, letting US Pro subscribers delegate tasks or monitoring requests to their dot over iMessage or RCS using text, photos, or voice notes and receive proactive text follow ups.

Personal AI assistants have rapidly shifted toward asynchronous background execution and native messaging channels where users already spend their day. Just one day earlier, OpenAI rolled out native iCloud Mail and Calendar connectors across ChatGPT Web, Desktop, and iOS so the assistant can read and manage personal schedules and correspondence.

Deep dive

OpenAI announced on Wednesday afternoon that ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States can now text their personal dot directly through Apple iMessage or Android RCS. Rather than opening the standalone ChatGPT app to start a session, users can send a quick text message, attach a photo, or record a voice note asking their dot to handle an errand or monitor an ongoing topic in the background.

Once assigned a task or watch item, the dot can initiate outbound messages back to the user's phone whenever a relevant update occurs. OpenAI emphasized that the messaging channel is locked to a strict one to one pairing over iMessage or RCS: only the verified account owner can send messages to their dot, and the dot can only message that single user back.

Combined with Tuesday's rollout of iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins, native iMessage and RCS texting turns ChatGPT's dot into an always reachable mobile contact that can both receive multimodal voice or photo instructions on the go and push timely alerts without relying on app notifications.

What to expect next

The iMessage and RCS texting integration is rolling out now as a preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, giving users a direct mobile phone number for their personal dot. Expect OpenAI to expand native messaging access to Plus, Team, and Enterprise tiers as well as international mobile carriers once proactive notification throughput and anti spoofing safeguards are validated during the US preview.
