Claude Code desktop creator Anthony Morris announces his departure from Anthropic

Yesterday was my last day at Anthropic. I created Claude Code on desktop because I believe everyone can be a builder. Every feature request and bug report we got from this community was a gift that impacted millions of lives. I’m eternally grateful for those gifts, the product wouldn’t be what it is without you. Anthropic is doing some of the most important work of our time. Contributing to that mission will forever be a career highlight for me. I never imagined I’d get to contribute to something so special in my lifetime. Walking away from my best friends, a product I poured my heart into, and the mission was the hardest thing I’ve done in my career. But now I have some free time for GTA VI. I'm already itching to get back to addressing all your feedback. I'll share what's next soon!

Context

Why it matters

Anthony Morris built the desktop application for Claude Code that expanded Anthropic's coding agent beyond command line developers into the unified desktop home for all of Anthropic's consumer and enterprise products.

Claude Code initially launched as a command line tool for software engineers before expanding into a graphical desktop interface that supports local workspaces, multi agent sessions, and non technical creators. Anthony Morris created the Claude Code desktop client and helped grow it into Anthropic's unified desktop hub.

Deep dive

On the morning of October 24, software engineer Anthony Morris announced on X that Friday, October 23 was his final day at Anthropic, drawing more than 422,000 views. Morris shared that he originally created Claude Code on desktop out of a belief that everyone should be able to build software, not only engineers comfortable working inside a terminal.

According to Morris, what began as an internal prototype aimed at non technical creators eventually grew into the unified desktop home for all of Anthropic's products. He thanked the Claude Code team and specifically credited Claude Code creator Boris Cherny and product lead Cat Wu for backing the vision of a graphical desktop agent environment from day one.

Morris's announcement came roughly eight hours after fellow Claude Code builder Thariq Shihipar announced his own departure from Anthropic, marking two prominent exits from the Claude Code organization on the same day. Like Shihipar, Morris expressed gratitude toward his teammates and said he is excited for what comes next without naming a new venture or employer.

What to expect next

As desktop agent interfaces become the primary surface where both software developers and non technical knowledge workers orchestrate local files, browser tasks, and code execution, engineers who built the first wave of desktop coding agents at Anthropic and OpenAI are positioned to shape the next generation of AI native personal computing software, graphical workspace environments, and multi agent orchestration tools.
