Claude Code engineer Thariq Shihipar leaves Anthropic after more than a year scaling the coding agent
I’ve left Anthropic after more than a year of working on Claude Code and seeing it scale larger than I ever imagined. I have really loved working at Ant and believe deeply in the mission, and most of all, the idea of a race to the top. The idea that if we work hard and responsibly, we can raise the bar and inspire others to great outcomes. And if we all push each other to be better, things can be radically good. I will carry the spirit of this with me forever. My colleagues at Anthropic are the most talented, thoughtful, competent, and earnest people I have ever met. I am glad they are at the wheel and trust them deeply. To the community on X, thank you for everything. You’ve made this the most fun (and sometimes stressful) job I’ve ever had. For me, it is time for a bit of a break before diving into something new. If you want more excellent Claude Code content, you should follow @addyosmani , @lydiahallie, @_catwu, @ClaudeDevs and of course @bcherny who started it all.
Context
Thariq Shihipar was one of the most visible core builders and community voices behind Claude Code during its rapid expansion from a terminal research preview into Anthropic's flagship developer product.
Anthropic launched Claude Code in early 2025 under creator Boris Cherny and scaled it into a leading agentic coding tool across terminal, IDE, desktop, and web workflows. Thariq Shihipar, a former Y Combinator founder and MIT Media Lab researcher, spent more than a year building features and engaging directly with developers on X.
Deep dive
Early on October 24, Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar announced on X that he has left Anthropic after more than a year working on Claude Code and watching the product scale far beyond his initial expectations. His farewell post drew more than 3.3 million views and over 21,000 likes within hours as developers and fellow AI engineers thanked him for his responsiveness on X.
In his statement, Shihipar praised Anthropic's culture and its commitment to a race to the top in responsible AI development, calling his colleagues at the lab the most talented, thoughtful, and earnest people he has worked with. He noted that interacting with the developer community on X made the role both the most fun and occasionally the most stressful job of his career, and pointed users to follow colleagues Addy Osmani, Lydia Hallie, Cat Wu, the ClaudeDevs account, and Claude Code creator Boris Cherny.
Shihipar wrote that he plans to take a break before starting something new and did not announce a specific company or venture. His announcement arrived on the same morning that Claude Code desktop creator Anthony Morris also shared that Friday was his final day at Anthropic, prompting widespread discussion across Silicon Valley about whether the departing engineers will launch new developer tool startups.
What to expect next
With Boris Cherny, Cat Wu, Addy Osmani, and Lydia Hallie continuing to lead Claude Code's engineering and developer ecosystem, Anthropic retains a deep bench on its flagship coding agent while venture investors, competing frontier labs, and developer tool builders watch what Shihipar creates once he returns from his break to start a new company or independent engineering project in agentic software and developer tooling.
