Deep dive

On October 21, Microsoft posted that Volkswagen Group has brought Microsoft Copilot to more than 330,000 employees, embedding secure AI assistance across its business so teams can focus on higher value tasks.

Microsoft's press release calls this the latest step in a phased rollout. Volkswagen first gave employees broad access to Copilot Chat, which it said reached upwards of 300,000 monthly active users. Employees now use Copilot with Work IQ for more advanced tasks across engineering, production, procurement and sales, and more than 26,000 agents were active across the group in the past month.

Sophie Vassarotti, Volkswagen Group's head of group data and AI, said the real value of AI comes from making it available at scale in everyday work. Agnes Heftberger, who chairs Microsoft Germany's management board, said Volkswagen shows how companies can evolve AI from a personal productivity tool into a foundation for future innovation.

The companies also intend to expand their collaboration and scale Volkswagen's Intelligent Data Foundation, its unified data system, on Microsoft Fabric. The deployment is set to be presented at the Microsoft Frontier Tour in Cologne on October 22. The release gives no figures on cost or measured productivity gains.

Also watch whether other large manufacturers announce deployments of similar size, and whether Volkswagen reports concrete savings or productivity numbers. Rival offerings from Google and OpenAI for enterprises will compete for the same customers. Volkswagen's next step, scaling its data platform on Microsoft Fabric, will show how deep the partnership goes.
