Context
Fast adoption of Meta's assistant app shows the consumer AI race is far from settled, even as ChatGPT leads.
Polymarket's post is secondhand and cites no source; the figure comes from the app analytics firm Sensor Tower, as reported by TechCrunch and others. Muse is Meta's AI assistant app, launched on September 8.
Deep dive
On October 20, Polymarket posted that Meta's Muse AI app surpassed 10 million US downloads in just 40 days, a milestone achieved by only 11 other apps in history.
The figures come from Sensor Tower. According to TechCrunch, Muse passed 10.9 million downloads worldwide since its September debut, 10.2 million of them in the US, making it the 12th app to reach 10 million US downloads in its first 40 days. Yahoo Finance, citing the same data, said the most recent app to do so was Meta's Threads in July 2023, and that Muse reached an estimated 2.5 million daily users on October 16.
The Verge noted that Sensor Tower attributed part of the success to a sizable advertising push by Meta. Downloads also do not show how many people keep using an app.
Yahoo Finance reported that, over the same period, US downloads of ChatGPT fell 25% compared with the prior 30 days, according to Sensor Tower.
Polymarket's version of the milestone, achieved by only 11 other apps in history, leaves out that Sensor Tower's records start in 2015. The October 19 deck covered Deutsche Bank charts comparing Muse's early downloads with ChatGPT's.
What to expect next
Watch whether Muse keeps users after Meta's advertising push, which daily active user estimates will show over the coming weeks. Meta may share its own usage figures in its next earnings report. Also watch whether ChatGPT's download decline continues and how OpenAI responds, and whether Muse's growth holds outside the US. Sensor Tower's next monthly report should show whether the pace of downloads holds.
