OpenAI adds team tasks to ChatGPT, letting teams automate recurring work such as a weekly update on what shipped and what is blocked
You can now automate recurring engineering work with team tasks in ChatGPT, like pulling together what shipped and what’s blocked every Friday. Your teammates can review the results and change what the next update covers, so you don’t have to maintain it on your own.
Context
Shared, scheduled agent tasks move ChatGPT further into team workflows that tools like Slack and project trackers handle today.
This is a first hand product post from OpenAI Developers. ChatGPT already had scheduled tasks for individuals, and team tasks make them shared.
Deep dive
On October 20, OpenAI Developers posted that users can now automate recurring engineering work with team tasks in ChatGPT, such as pulling together what shipped and what is blocked every Friday.
It said teammates can review the results and change what the next update covers, so one person does not have to maintain the task alone.
The image shows a Scheduled panel with tasks grouped by team. A marketing team has a daily task summarizing sales, and a data science team has tasks for sentiment analysis, triggered by a Slack event, and a daily customer funnel. In the example, a daily sales chart appears in a shared thread, and two teammates ask ChatGPT to break it down by sales channel and save it to Google Slides.
The post did not say which ChatGPT plans include team tasks or how many tasks a team can run. The Slack trigger in the image suggests tasks can start from events as well as on a schedule, but the post itself only describes recurring tasks.
The feature builds on ChatGPT's push into shared team tools, including Space, its workspace for documents edited with ChatGPT, covered in this deck on October 14.
What to expect next
Watch for OpenAI to say which plans get team tasks and whether event triggers like Slack messages are broadly available. How teams use it, and whether shared tasks stay accurate without close review, will decide how far it replaces manual status updates. Also watch for rivals such as Anthropic, Google and Microsoft to add similar shared agent tasks. Pricing and limits on how often tasks can run will also matter to larger teams.
