Mistral releases Voxtral 3, a family of transcription and speech models with a new voice agent SDK
Introducing Voxtral 3: state-of-the-art Transcribe and Speech models powering Mistral鈥檚 new voice agents API. 馃У
Context
Builders get a European option for voice agents that can be self hosted, which matters for companies that must keep audio data in their own infrastructure.
Mistral AI is a French AI lab. Voxtral is its family of speech models, and version 3 adds text to speech and a software kit for building voice agents alongside transcription.
Deep dive
On October 20, Mistral introduced Voxtral 3, calling it state of the art Transcribe and Speech models powering its new voice agents API.
According to Mistral's announcement, the family includes Voxtral Small Transcribe 3, a speech to text model for more than 50 languages, and Voxtral Mini TTS 3, a text to speech model supporting more than 35 languages, plus an SDK for building voice agents. A Pro Voice feature, Mistral says, can adapt a custom voice from 30 minutes of audio.
Mistral describes the transcription model as state of the art, and its documentation lists a price of $0.004 per minute. The performance claims are Mistral's own.
The models are available through Mistral's EU hosted API or for self deployment, which lets organizations control where audio is processed.
The launch came the same day ElevenLabs introduced Eleven Realtime, its own speech to speech models for voice agents. The demo video shows two people holding a conversation with an agent built on the new API.
What to expect next
Watch for independent tests of Voxtral 3's transcription accuracy and speech quality against OpenAI, ElevenLabs and Google. The self hosting option may appeal to European companies with strict data rules, so watch for customer announcements in contact centers and public services. Also watch whether Mistral releases open weights for any of the new models, as it has for some earlier ones.
