Satya Nadella highlights Saint Gobain using Microsoft Discovery to speed up research on lower carbon cement additives

Great to meet with the @saintgobain team in Paris today and learn how they’re using Microsoft Discovery to help accelerate the development of new more-efficient construction materials.

Context

Why it matters

It is a concrete example of AI agents shortening early stage materials research at a large industrial company.

Microsoft Discovery is Microsoft's AI platform that lets scientists use agents to search literature, generate hypotheses and plan experiments. Saint Gobain, a French construction materials company, signed a framework agreement with Microsoft in July 2026.

Deep dive

On October 20, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella posted that he met the Saint Gobain team in Paris and learned how they are using Microsoft Discovery to help accelerate the development of new, more efficient construction materials. The post carried a promotional video from Microsoft.

Microsoft's own feature story, published the same day, says Saint Gobain used Discovery to look for cement additives that could cut carbon emissions and strengthen cement. Cement production accounts for around 7% of annual global carbon dioxide emissions, the story says.

Saint Gobain program manager Mojdeh Rastgoo Lemaitre told Microsoft the team gathered 62,000 patents and 44,000 abstracts, and that building that knowledge base would have taken researchers a year but took a couple of hours with AI. She said Discovery helped the team come up with several hypotheses for new additive ingredients worth testing in about six weeks. These are candidate ideas, not proven products, and they still have to be tested.

Saint Gobain was one of the first clients to use Discovery in a private release in March, according to Microsoft, and worked with engineers from a new Microsoft unit called the Microsoft Frontier Company, which places engineers inside customer companies. The figures come from Microsoft and Saint Gobain and are self reported.

What to expect next

Watch whether Saint Gobain reports lab results for the additive candidates that Discovery helped propose, which would show whether faster hypothesis generation leads to better materials. Also watch whether Microsoft opens Discovery more widely beyond its early clients, and whether other industrial companies announce similar projects through the Microsoft Frontier Company. Competing scientific agent platforms from other labs will be measured against cases like this one.
