Skyfall AI unveils SKY 001, a research preview it calls the first engineering world model, claiming it beats GPT 6 Astra on CAD tasks at far lower cost

Introducing SKY-001, the first Engineering World Model. On CAD and BIM tasks, it beats GPT-6 Astra and every frontier model we tested: -> 51-125x faster - > 150-210x cheaper -> Higher IOU than all frontier models SKY-001 lets you dream a physical object before you build it. 18 months of work. Built by the team out of Maluuba's deep learning lab (acq. by @MSRResearch). The first ‘AI General Engineer’ will be the backbone for Autonomous Manufacturing.

Context

Why it matters

A model that plans buildable CAD designs step by step, rather than generating surface shapes, would push AI into physical engineering work, though for now the claims come only from Skyfall.

The speed, cost and accuracy figures are self reported by Skyfall AI and the model is in research preview, not generally available. Sam Pasupalak is Skyfall's cofounder and chief executive and previously led Maluuba, which Microsoft acquired.

Deep dive

On October 19, Sam Pasupalak posted an introduction to SKY 001, which he called the first engineering world model. He said that on CAD and BIM tasks it beats GPT 6 Astra and every frontier model the team tested, running 51 to 125 times faster and 150 to 210 times cheaper with a higher intersection over union score, a measure of how closely generated shapes match targets. He said the model took 18 months to build and that the first AI general engineer will be the backbone for autonomous manufacturing.

Skyfall's press release says SKY 001 is in research preview. It describes a hierarchical visual world model that, from text or a 2D sketch, plans the full sequence of CAD steps, breaking a design into parts down to individual sketch strokes and extrusions and then reassembling them into a 3D object that opens in tools such as Autodesk Fusion. The company says this differs from generative models that produce only surface geometry without the feature trees engineers need.

The product page says SKY 001 does not do next token prediction like a language model, and pitches future uses from circuit board and aerospace design to protein folding.

In the release, Pasupalak said replacing brute force LLM calls with long term planning world models will make token costs plummet.

What to expect next

Watch whether Skyfall publishes a technical report, benchmark details or open access so others can check the speed, cost and accuracy comparisons against GPT 6 Astra. The research preview label means real users have not yet tested it at scale. The useful signals are design partners in manufacturing or architecture using it on production parts, and whether larger labs answer with their own CAD capable models.
