Nvidia's App update adds a local MCP server, on by default, that lets AI agents control recordings, game settings and drivers
The latest NVIDIA App update (version 11.0.9.565) adds an AI agent MCP server, enabled by default, runs locally and lets AI tools interact with the NVIDIA App. It can: • Check the current game • Start/stop recordings • Take screenshots • Control Instant Replay and Highlights • Toggle RTX Dynamic Vibrance • Show performance stats • Find and launch games • Check NVIDIA drivers • Change game optimization settings • Adjust Battery Boost and Whisper Mode on laptops Turn off that shit

Context
An agent control feature turned on by default in software installed on millions of gaming PCs raises questions about security and user consent.
This is secondhand: Pirat_Nation, a gaming news account, describes the update and urges readers to turn it off. Nvidia's release highlights page is the official source for the update.
Deep dive
On October 16, Pirat_Nation posted that the latest NVIDIA App update, version 11.0.9.565, adds an AI agent MCP server that is enabled by default, runs locally and lets AI tools interact with the app. It listed abilities including checking the current game, starting and stopping recordings, taking screenshots, controlling Instant Replay and Highlights, showing performance stats, finding and launching games, checking drivers, changing game optimization settings and adjusting laptop battery modes, and told readers to turn it off.
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for AI assistants to use tools in other software. Summaries of Nvidia's release notes say the server runs only on the local machine and lets compatible agents control the app through natural language, and that it can be switched off under an option to allow AI agents to control NVIDIA App in the app's settings.
The attached screenshot shows that setting switched on in a section called AI Agents and App Connections, alongside options to copy a prompt for connecting an agent and view details of the server.
Nvidia has not publicly addressed the criticism of the default setting.
What to expect next
Watch whether Nvidia changes the feature to off by default after user complaints, or adds clearer consent prompts.
Also watch for security research on whether the local server can be reached or misused by malicious software, and whether other PC software makers add similar agent controls to their apps. Uptake among gamers using AI assistants will show whether the feature is actually wanted.
