Gartner predicts over 80% of neocloud providers will cease independent operations by 2030, as CoreWeave's credit sells off
"Over 80% Of Neoclouds Will Fold": Gartner Predicts A Bloodbath As CoreWeave Credit Prices In Default
Context
A major research firm saying AI revenue will not cover planned spending adds weight to fears about the debt funding the AI buildout, especially for specialist GPU clouds.
This item is secondhand: ZeroHedge is summarizing a Gartner press release from October 14 and adding its own framing, including the word bloodbath. Gartner's analyst said ceasing independent operations can mean acquisition or partnership, not only failure.
Deep dive
On October 14, ZeroHedge posted: Over 80% Of Neoclouds Will Fold: Gartner Predicts A Bloodbath As CoreWeave Credit Prices In Default. Its article tied the forecast to a selloff in CoreWeave's shares and bonds that day.
Gartner's press release says that by 2030, cost pressure and the lack of a differentiating business model will force over 80% of neocloud providers, cloud companies built around AI compute, to cease independent operations. It also says over $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment by the end of 2030, because enterprise and consumer AI revenue will not support profitable returns on all planned spending.
TechTarget reported Gartner's math: AI providers may spend up to $7 trillion on infrastructure by 2030, which would need $8.5 trillion in revenue to cover spending, financing and a 12% return, against about $3.5 trillion of expected AI revenue. Gartner analyst Will Sommer told TechTarget that ceasing independent operations may include acquisition, partnership or outright failure, and that compute assets will not simply disappear.
Heise reported that Gartner expects the market for AI optimized infrastructure services to grow from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030, which it called too little to recoup investments before the next GPU generation.
What to expect next
Watch whether neocloud consolidation starts with acquisitions by hyperscalers or chipmakers, and how CoreWeave, Nebius and smaller GPU clouds refinance their debt.
Also watch whether other forecasters back or dispute Gartner's revenue gap, and whether AI labs' revenue growth, such as Anthropic's reported third quarter jump, narrows it faster than Gartner expects. Gartner's full report, which looks out to 2032, may add more detail on these estimates.
