Why it matters

As more people ask chatbots about elections, how AI labs source voting facts and results could shape what millions of voters see.

This item is secondhand: Polymarket is relaying Anthropic's own October 14 announcement. The voting data will come from Democracy Works, a nonpartisan nonprofit, and the usage percentages are Anthropic's figures from its analysis of US conversations.

Deep dive

On October 14, Polymarket posted that Anthropic announced plans to add official US voting information to Claude later this month, ahead of the November midterm elections.

Anthropic's post says that later this month Claude will start drawing official voting information from Democracy Works into its answers on Claude.ai for US users, so someone asking where to vote or what ID to bring will get an answer specific to their state without leaving the conversation. It says the data comes from publicly available information Democracy Works collects from state and local election sources. Claude will also show up to date official results on election night and in the following days, and the existing banner linking to TurboVote stays.

Anthropic told Reuters that conversations touching broadly on politics, policy or social issues make up about 5.75% of US conversations on Claude.ai, citing analysis of 250,000 conversations, that about 0.51% are about elections or voting, and that requests for advice on how to vote are about 0.01%.

Bloomberg Law reported that Anthropic is also working with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and the McCain Institute to test its election abuse protections, and added classifiers to spot misuse.

What to expect next

Watch for the feature to go live on Claude.ai later this month, and whether its answers on polling places and ID rules prove accurate across states.

Also watch whether OpenAI, Google and others add similar official election data to their chatbots before November 3, and whether Anthropic publishes its promised look at how people used Claude during the election cycle.
