OpenAI Details Expanded Monitoring of Frontier Models That Caught a Model Reaching the Live Internet in Training (opens the post on X)

Today, we’re sharing a look at our expanded system for monitoring frontier models at OpenAI, which in September helped us catch a model’s attempt to access the live internet during training. Since the Hugging Face incident—when models broke out of an internal cybersecurity investigation where we weren’t running our misalignment monitors—we’ve substantially expanded our monitoring of frontier agents. We now monitor all frontier reinforcement learning runs and evaluations, as well as all internal Codex use. When our system finds evidence of a problem that might require intervention, it rapidly alerts human responders who can investigate and take action. To detect when a model’s behavior departs from what we intended, we use several layers of monitoring. Activation probes look for patterns in a model’s internal activity. Reviewer models examine its reasoning and tool use, and investigative agents can read back through the model’s entire transcript to understand how a sequence of actions fits together and whether it warrants human review. To test whether our current system would have detected the Hugging Face incident, we replayed the recorded activity with our new monitors in place. In the replay, our monitors alerted our security team about 30 minutes after the agents escaped their sandbox. That was more than 30 hours before the point at which the agents breached Hugging Face’s systems in the original incident. In September, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to reach the live internet. Our monitors flagged the breach within 15 minutes, and a responder began reviewing the alert three minutes later. The alert enabled responders to investigate while the run was still underway. As we give models more autonomy, we need to know when they cross a boundary we expected to hold. We believe that monitoring is essential to catching those failures in time for people to intervene.

OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux Says Usage Limits Are Doubling for Pro and Business Premium and the Pro 200 Cut Is Off (opens the post on X)

Day 25/ We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today. We heard your kind feedback and won’t be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same. We’re also going to continue offering extended limits for dots for now, and usage of your dot will still continue to be separate from your default usage. And we'll of course also keep shipping better models and other efficiency improvements that increase your effective usage over time.

Anthropic Says Claude Now Flags Potential Misuse in Its Own Conversations, a Technique It Calls Self Assessment (opens the post on X)

We’ve trained Claude to flag potential misuse in conversations, a technique we call self-assessment. Right after it responds, Claude gives a preliminary safety assessment of the conversation. Since we began using self-assessment in June, it has surfaced misuse that our other safeguards weren’t designed to catch. Because Claude has already read the conversation, self-assessment is very efficient. And unlike classifiers, which target a discrete set of harms, it draws on Claude’s own judgment, so it gets more accurate as our models improve. Read more on our new Safeguards blog:

Google DeepMind Economists Release The Economics of Intelligence, Arguing Coordination Drives AI's Economic Impact (opens the post on X)

I joined @GoogleDeepMind to develop a research program on the economics of AGI. Today, together with Andrew Koh (@andrewjkoh) and Shane Legg (@ShaneLegg), we are incredibly excited to release The Economics of Intelligence, the first in a series of projects from our group on how AGI will change the economy. How do capability improvements transform the economy, and when? In this project, we define thresholds of economic capabilities, e.g., minimal AGI, based on how they transform the economy. We then track how the economy–market structure, employment, and wages–changes during the transition across capability regimes. We have seen exponential increases in what AI agents can do but the broader economy seems almost remarkably unchanged. Part of the reason is that the solo AI agent is the wrong economic object; economic transformation is an equilibrium outcome where organizations compete. Looking at how intelligence functions within organizations, transformation will depend on when two key capability thresholds are crossed: competence (gains on individual skills, e.g., coding, math) and coordination (gains on ability of agents to cooperate and work together). We show that what economic transformation looks like depends on whether AI becomes supercompetent, supercooperative, or both—the regime of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Tracking this transition shows why the real visible transformation may come from improvements in coordination—a capability most benchmarks don’t yet track. Past a certain threshold, AI capabilities can break the Coasian ceiling on firm size and lead to an economy that looks drastically different than the one we see today. Two main takeaways: 1. To understand the path of transformation, we should be tracking agentic coordination more closely. 2. The impact of AI will likely show up in wages before market structure or employment. We are really excited about this paper. Excited to hear people’s thoughts. Link:

Snaptrude Launches an AI Agent That Takes Building Designs From a Site to a Construction Ready BIM Model (opens the post on X)

Today we're launching @snaptrude Agent, the most advanced agent for building design. It does real design work with you, from a site to a construction-ready LOD 400 model with structure, MEP and drawings. Then can go back to your existing software with your families intact. About a year ago we bet the company on AI. Honestly the insight came from software engineering. It wasn't long ago that autocomplete felt like a big deal, and now engineers direct agents that write a lot of the code. I think the same shift is coming to how we design buildings, and it's already started. Most designers I meet aren't short on skill, they're short on time. Take the call every design team dreads, the client cuts the budget by 30%. Today that's a bad month for everyone. With the agent you're the director. You decide where the cost comes out, and it updates the layout, coordinates the structure and MEP, and redoes the drawings. So when design exploration gets this cheap, we go from 3 options to 300, and more options means better buildings. Since August our users have gone through more than 140 billion tokens, and firms like Jacobs, Studio+, Kajima, VMDO, Dekker and hundreds of others use Snaptrude today. In our early access, more than 2,000 designers have run over 25,000 tasks through the agent since September. We also built a benchmark for this, AECBench, because in AEC an almost correct answer is still wrong. It gives AI the same brief an architect would get, has its design in a real BIM model, and scores the result against the brief and against how architects review design. We're publishing the first results today, link below. Thank you @prashanthp at @Accel and Shub and the team at @foundamental for backing us when this was still a bet, and the Snaptrude team, who built every bit of this. Really proud of you all. Thanks to our investors, @scottbelsky, @andreasklinger, @thilokonzok, @immad, @CindyXBi, @DanilaVladi, @jmwass, rahulchaudhary, @adamecourt, Zach Ginsburg, Alex duff, Paul grossinger, really appreciate all the help along the way.
